Timothy Darling Presbyterian Church USA

On Wednesday, May of 1888, a seminary student, Mr. George Clayton Shaw came to Oxford, a town of 17,479 Negroes, fifty-six% of the population. There was no Black Presbyterian Church in the community, with only one Black, Mrs. Harriette Howell, attending the white Presbyterian church. He called for a church service that Sunday and with the help of Mrs. Howell, there were seventy-five in attendance.

On the first Sunday in August, 1888 the church was established and given the name Timothy Darling Presbyterian church as a tribute to Dr. Timothy Darling, a former teacher of Shaw at Auburn Theological.

Shaw raised fifty-five dollars in order to continue the work while he returned to seminary to study. When he returned in the summer of 1889, he returned to find the church closed due to the efforts of those who did not want an African American Presbyterian church to flourish. Shaw asked for help, and a check was sent from Dr Darling and Mrs. Mary Potter for three hundred dollars and the message, “Buy a lot and build a church.” A lot was purchased about two blocks from the center of town and a small building was constructed, the first Presbyterian church for African Americans in Granville County.

On May 7, 1890, the Rev. George Clayton Shaw graduated from Auburn Theological Seminary. On May 14, he married Miss Mary E. Lewis. Though their efforts, not only was a church founded, but also Mary Potter Academy. Dr. Shaw served the church until his death in 1936. Dr. Hermon S. Davis, a graduate of Johnson C. Smith Theological Seminary in Charlotte, N.C., the principal of Mary Potter School, was installed as pastor in April 11, 1937.

Several ministers have served the church. Revs:Clarence E. Lannon: May 19, 1957 - April 6, 1961; W. Roscoe Walls: May 13, 1962 - December 1, 1969; James A. Dickens: September 30, 1970 - July 1975; Dr. Kay-Robert Volkwijn: February 1976 -1984. Herbert Hill and the Rev. Eulando Hinton. Timothy Darling Presbyterian Church is presently served by the Rev.
